Thought For The Day

“There” is no better a place than “here.”

When your “there” has become a “here,”

you will simply obtain another “there”

that will again look better than “here.”

June Board Meeting

The June 2016 Board meeting was held at Crouse Cafe at 7 a.m. June 2nd.
1.  Gary Coleman has been treasurer of our Club for over 15 years.  With retirement, Gary has asked to step away from his duties as treasurer.  We thank Gary for his dedication and support.
2.  Seth Lampman has agreed to become our Club's Treasurer and was approved by the board.  Thank you Seth.
3.  Literacy Solstice is June 20th.  Contact Ron if you plan to attend either of the sessions.  There are two places that members may participate:
       7 - 8:30 a.m. - United Way Offices Des Moines
       2 - 3:30 p.m. - Village in Indianola.
Members are encouraged to attend one of the sessions to help assemble literacy kits.
4.  A banner has been secured and permission granted to display in the Indianola High School gym.  The Board approved the purchase of a banner.
5.  A budget line item of $250 was approved to fund an Interact Club at the Indianola High School beginning with the Fall School year. Dave is working with Educators to get the club started.
6.  The 2016/17 budget was reviewed and approved. Copies will be available soon.
7.  Terry provided an overview of the "Steve Pfeifer Memorial Sign Building" at the Balloon field.  An accurate materials estimate was obtained this week which shows the project will be more expensive than originally estimated.  Total cost of construction will be about $5,000.  The National Balloon Classic has agreed to pay a portion of the expense and efforts will be made to find other funds to help with the overall cost.  Work will commence soon.
8.  The Club meeting on June 10th will be moved to the YMCA because of the Dobbers Up Golf Tournament.
9.  Warm Coat?  Boot Project??  Both topics were discussed, but a decision was made to gather more information before a formal decision is made to fund either or both of the projects.
10. The board approved the purchase of new Song Books for the Club, at a cost of $5 each.  Ron will take care of ordering the new books.

Rotary International holds 107th Annual Convention

Convention attendees were treated to a surprise visit from Paul Harris during the opening session of the Korea convention on Sunday, 29 May.

An animated hologram of Rotary's founder joined RI President K.R. Ravindran on stage, and proceeded to talk about Rotary's growth from a small club in Chicago to an international organization that is changing the world.

"Rotary has been a gift to the world," said Harris. "This Rotary program of friendship and service certainly has succeeded way beyond the dreams of us back in Chicago."

Harris also noted that the basis of Rotary and the convention remains as it was in his day: a marriage of friendship, values, and service.

Rotary's first convention, in 1910, drew 60 attendees in Chicago. This year, more than 40,000 have come to Seoul.

Ravindran quoted Harris as saying, "Rotary is the door to friendship, and let us throw it open."
