Service Committee Minutes

Service Committee Minutes

January 20, 2016

Present: Ron Heideman, Jan Heinicke, Amy Duncan, Mike Lindeberg, Shawn Malaney, Sinnika Waugh

Committee Description: We reviewed the description from RI and modified it slightly:

  • Plan projects, carry them out, and evaluate them

  • Identify opportunities for signature projects that will increase our club’s recognition in the community

  • Work with other organizations volunteers, and community members to maximize the impact of our projects

  • Coordinate fundraising

  • Understand liability issues that affect our club projects and activities

  • Work with the Public Relations committee to promote projects

  • Collaborate with other Rotary clubs on projects

Presidential Citation: We considered the goals assigned to our committee. We need to achieve three of the seven. We picked four:

  • Have at least one club member attend a grant management seminar (Ron will attend in March)

  • Partner with the Foundation by sponsoring at least one project funded by a global grant or a district grant (Indianola is collaborating with Des Moines metro clubs on a water event)

  • Get 75% of club members involved in hands-on project participation (a spreadsheet will be available to document member participation in Rotary events 2015-16)

  • Establish partnership with one or more corporate or government entities and conduct a project together (Rotary-Library Booksale)

Budget for Next Year: (following is a first draft for discussion)

  • 3rd Grade Dictionaries $720

  • Book Sale $100

  • Balloon Parking $1,000

  • RYE Pumpkin Carving $200

  • Young Parents Meals $250

  • Bike Ride $50

  • RYLA $1,000

  • Puppy Jake Foundation $100

  • Boy Scouts $250

  • Habitat for Humanity $1,000

  • Helping Hand $1,000

  • Future projects to be determined $1,000

Total: $6,670

Bike Ride: We’re waiting to hear from Warren County Leadership Institute. If they participate, it may be a big event with a silent auction and band. If not, it will probably be a small social ride

Rotary Buildings at Balloon Field: We’re waiting for direction from the board to repair or replace the buildings

Greater Des Moines Rotary Event: The Greater Des Moines Rotary committee is planning an event centering on “water”. It will be designed to promote Rotary and include a major speaker and local a service project. Individual clubs will be encouraged to have water-based activities throughout the week. The date has not been determined.

Possible Future Service Projects: Backpacks for Hunger; Coordinate exchange of used children athletic supplies; Backpacks of school supplies; Collect boots and gloves; Supplies for children victimized by domestic violence; Meals from the Heartland (sponsored by Rotaract)

Hands-on Project Participation: Think about the Rotary projects you’ve been involved with during the 2015-16 year and check them on the spreadsheet that will be at future meetings. Projects include: Book Sale; Balloon Parking; RYE Pumpkin Carving; Holiday Extravaganza; Committee Attendance/Duties; Board Meetings; Officer Duties. The Presidential Citation goal is that at least 75% of members be involved with hands-on activities. Our goal is that 100% of members be involved!

Comments are always welcome!!
