Sinikka's guest is Joe Stevens, Cofounder and CEO of Joppa Outreach.  Joppa Outreach serves unsheltered homeless people living in tents, in vehicles and under bridges in Polk County and helps them get off the streets.
Mr. Stevens is also Founder and Chairman of the Street Outreach Coalition and helped create the Des Moines Homeless Action Plan. He works with the Governor and Mayor each winter to proclaim December 21 as National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day in the State of Iowa and the City of Des Moines. He is responsible for organizing several homeless-related community events each year, including the Iowa Homeless Memorial and the Homeless Camp Cleanups, which have resulted in more than 250,000 lbs of junk and debris being cleaned up.
In addition to co-founding Joppa in 2008 with his wife and son, Joe has helped start several other organizations and served as their Chairman and or CEO.  He is passionate about helping homeless people get off the streets, overcome their plights and rebuild their lives.
This Friday books will be moved from both Simpson and Indianola Libraries to storage.
Please plan to spend a few minutes after Rotary helping load and move books to the USDA Storage site.    Contact Ron if there are questions.

Officials at Indianola Schools have been contacted to help identify the number of students who need winter coats.

Once we have an estimated total number and breakdown of how many of each size we need to order, we will be able to determine how money must be raised to provide these children with coats.

Stay tuned.......

Senator Harkin's Office contacted Terry to ask if our Rotary Club would be interested in working the parking lot on September14 for Senator Harkin's Final Steak Fry event.
In all we need 10 - 12 Volunteers willing to direct traffic (No Ticket sales).

The Senator has a large following of persons who are handicapped, so it is important to have at least 3 people working an expanded handicap section in the North East Corner of the field.

Arthur Frederick Sheldon, the Rotarian whose convention speech inspired Rotary's secondary motto, One Profits Most Who Serves Best.

Rotary’s official mottoes, Service Above Self and One Profits Most Who Serves Best, trace back to the early days of the organization.

In 1911, He Profits Most Who Serves Best was approved as the Rotary motto at the second convention of the National Association of Rotary Clubs of America, in Portland, Oregon. It was adapted from a speech made by Rotarian Arthur Frederick Sheldon to the first convention, held in Chicago the previous year. Sheldon declared that "only the science of right conduct toward others pays. Business is the science of human services. He profits most who serves his fellows best."

The Portland convention also inspired the motto Service Above Self. During a convention outing on the Columbia River, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, talked with Seattle Rotarian J.E. Pinkham about the proper way to organize a Rotary club, offering the principle his club had adopted: Service, Not Self. Pinkham invited Paul P. Harris, who also was on the boat trip, to join their conversation. Harris asked Collins to address the convention, and the phrase Service, Not Self was met with great enthusiasm.

At the 1950 RI Convention in Detroit, slightly modified versions of the two slogans were formally approved as the official mottoes of Rotary: He Profits Most Who Serves Best and Service Above Self. The 1989  established Service Above Self as the principal motto of Rotary, because it best conveys the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service. He Profits Most Who Serves Best was modified by the 2004 Council to They Profit Most Who Serve Best and by the 2010 Council to its current wording, One Profits Most Who Serves Best.

In an effort to increase membership by 100,000 this year, RI President Gary C.K. Huang is urging clubs and districts to organize fun, informal community events called Rotary Days.

"We need to showcase our good work to everyone in the community," says Huang. "Rotary Days need to be fun and all-inclusive... Let's give people the opportunity to experience what it's like to make a difference."

Any club, big or small, can host a Rotary Day. Neighboring clubs can pool their resources and co-host an event, and entire districts can come together for a large-scale Rotary Day. In fact, several clubs and districts already have hosted picnics, concerts, parades, and other Rotary Day events. In addition, the Rotary Board of Directors and other senior leaders will facilitate several national Rotary Days in 2014-15.

Check out the new Rotary Days webpage for additional information, including tips about planning a Rotary Day, a calendar of Rotary Days scheduled around the world, information on how to receive a special award from your district governor, and details about a worldwide video contest.

4.  I am a member of the team for Veterans for Missing and Exploited Children, a nonprofit organization based in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Holden R. Barnhart, a military veteran who served in Iraq in 2006-2007, is the founder and president of our organization. I am trying to line up speaking engagements for him to help spread the word about our organization, what we have to offer all communities, and gain support. I would like to know if you would be interested in having Holden Barnhart speak at one of your meetings to help us get the word out that we are here. Please feel free to contact me via facebook message or call Holden Barnhart at 1808-772-3456. Thank you for taking the time to take a look at this and I look forward to hearing from you! www.vfmaec.com or visit us on our facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Veterans-for-Missing-and-Exploited-Children/194630694024081
