A Girl Scout Troupe at Irving Elementary School has begun a project to collect plastic lids and bottle caps.
The purpose of the project is to recycle the lids and caps into park benches.
The Girl Scout Troupe contacted Michael and asked if our Rotary Club would be interested in helping with the project.
When 400# of plastic lids and bottle caps are acquired, they can be delivered to a company in Illinois, who recycles the lids into park benches valued at $600 each.
Participants who deliver lids to the company are eligible to purchase a park bench at a reduced cost of $200.
More information will follow as to where the benches can be located, where to deliver the recycled lids and caps and who will raise the funds needed to purchase the benches.
Musa Muhammed Ali, a farmer in Borno state, Nigeria, has had to deal with the many ways polio has affected his life. For instance, he used to have to pay for transportation when he needed to buy feed for his animals. But after receiving a hand-operated tricycle funded through Rotary’s PolioPlus grants, Ali (pictured above) can now spend that money on other necessities. His life was changed by the “plus” in PolioPlus.
When we talk about PolioPlus, we know we are eradicating polio, but do we realize how many added benefits the program brings? The “plus” is something else that is provided as a part of the polio eradication campaign. It might be a hand-operated tricycle or access to water. It might be additional medical treatment, bed nets, or soap. A 2010 study estimates that vitamin A drops given to children at the same time as the polio vaccine have prevented 1.25 million deaths by decreasing susceptibility to infectious diseases.
Take a few minutes to click the link below and read about the many added benefits that have occurred in countries where Polio has been eradicated. The picture shows Musa Maaji, a polio disabled man, who learned how to build hand operated bicycles. Terry
