This Week's Program

This week we plan to discuss the Evening Club, RI Changes to Club Names, Rotary Of Indianola's Centennial Project and more.

Recycle Plastic Lids

A Girl Scout Troupe at Irving Elementary School has begun a project to collect plastic lids and bottle caps.

The purpose of the project is to recycle the lids and caps into park benches.

The Girl Scout Troupe contacted Michael and asked if our Rotary Club would be interested in helping with the project.

When 400# of plastic lids and bottle caps are acquired, they can be delivered to a company in Illinois, who recycles the lids into park benches valued at $600 each.

Participants who deliver lids to the company are eligible to purchase a park bench at a reduced cost of $200.

More information will follow as to where the benches can be located, where to deliver the recycled lids and caps and who will raise the funds needed to purchase the benches.

The Plus in PolioPlus

We’re doing so much more than eradicating polio

Musa Muhammed Ali, a farmer in Borno state, Nigeria, has had to deal with the many ways polio has affected his life. For instance, he used to have to pay for transportation when he needed to buy feed for his animals. But after receiving a hand-operated tricycle funded through Rotary’s PolioPlus grants, Ali (pictured above) can now spend that money on other necessities. His life was changed by the “plus” in PolioPlus.

When we talk about PolioPlus, we know we are eradicating polio, but do we realize how many added benefits the program brings? The “plus” is something else that is provided as a part of the polio eradication campaign. It might be a hand-operated tricycle or access to water. It might be additional medical treatment, bed nets, or soap. A 2010 study estimates that vitamin A drops given to children at the same time as the polio vaccine have prevented 1.25 million deaths by decreasing susceptibility to infectious diseases.

Take a few minutes to click the link below and read about the many added benefits that have occurred in countries where Polio has been eradicated.  The picture shows Musa Maaji, a polio disabled man, who learned how to build hand operated bicycles.  Terry

Indoor Ride To End Polio

Are you interested in riding to raise money to help with the eradication of Polio?

Three members of our club raised $635 through sponsorships in 2018, logging 39 miles during a week in November.  This amount was matched 2:1 by the Gates Foundation.

District 6000 raised over $14,000 from 164 riders last year, which was matched 2:1 by the Gates Foundation.  The District set a goal to raise $20,000 in 2019.

Speak with Terry if you are willing to participate this year.

  • We need riders.  Riders can ride outside on their own bicycles or on spinner bikes inside at the YMCA or any other location that has the equipment. AND
  • We need sponsors who are willing to support the riders.

The event will be held the week of November 16th - 23rd. Each rider can ask for sponsorship based on the number of miles that are ridden during the week.

Anyone interested in participating is asked to contact Terry Pauling at 515.249.9192.
