Agriculture's Clean Water Alliance (ACWA) is an association of 13 ag retailers operating in the Des Moines and Raccoon River basins. They have a dual mission to help farmers improve agronomic performance in the field while supporting environmental performance beyond the field's edge. A new practice gaining interest is the use of bioreactors to reduce the amount of nitrate-nitrogen reaching surface waters.
Beer and Clean Water: an overview of the Rotary Fellowship
Certified Iowa Citizen Monitor: IOWATER trains citizens to conduct basic water chemical, physical and biological measurements. We provide you the equipment and tools you need to start understanding and protecting Iowa's valuable water resources.
Common misconceptions about drainage and water quality: The webinar addresses common misconceptions about how various practices including nitrogen management, cover crops and perennials work to reduce nitrogen losses. In addition, the webinar will touch on drainage practices that you might hear about more in the future such as drainage water recycling.
Farm Buffer Strips to Reduce Soil and Chemical Runoff: Corinne has a source for a display that is trucked in and a small display. This could be set up at a farmers market. Participants would hand out fliers about the benefits of buffer strips.
Home Water Audit: Encourage water conservation by distributing this water audit at Farmers’ Markets.
InIowaWater.org: Help mitigate farm runoff by encouraging people to become aware of soil, nutrient, and chemical runoff and how we can prevent it.
Invite to join Beers Rotarians Enjoy Worldwide (BREW): Fellowships like BREW are Rotary's way of bringing together members who share a particular passion. Rotarian Fellowship Groups unite members who have expertise in a specific service area. The beer fellowship's leaders realized that joining forces with an action group dedicated to providing access to clean water would create a sum larger than the two parts.
River Clean Up: For members who are looking for a service opportunity that does not require a large time commitment, volunteering for a river cleanup project might be a good alternative.
Speakers On Water Quality/Farm Issues
Storm Drain Stenciling: Rotarians will learn more about the link between our streets and waterways as they stencil messages by storm drains.
Stream Cleanup Checklist
Water Bucket Hike: For the most impact recruit young kids, preferably girls, to carry the bucket. Use a convenient natural water source if available (river or lake). Walk through a group of people (i.e., farmers market).
The Water Challenge: The Water Challenge is a fundraising activity that would raise dollars that could then be contributed to the Water Project. Give up one expense for two weeks and contribute your savings.
Children’s Water Festival: This is a large educational event at Water Works Park. Rotary has been invited to help with the event.

Project AWARE isn’t for the person who’s afraid to get a little dirt under his or her fingernails. While most of your time is spent in a canoe or kayak, you are still fully immersed in the wilderness and eventually you’re bound to get dirty. Prepare to find mud in awkward places and potentially stinky things in your canoe. Most people find this aspect appealing; remembering the days when they were just kids playing in the mud... Intrigued? Check out our Project AWARE: Frequently Asked Questions. Increase awareness about, and community involvement in, water quality issues that impact the health of Iowa's aquatic resources. Engage Iowa's citizen volunteers in a project that challenges them to become stewards of the river and produces a tangible, quantitative result. Demonstrate the commitment of Iowa's citizens by giving of themselves and their valuable time to make a difference - one stretch of river, one piece of trash at a time.
New book praises Rotary's role in fight to end polio
By Sallyann Price
A new book in the field of public health highlights Rotary’s role in the global effort to wipe out polio, and places it in the context of humanity’s relentless struggle to contain the world’s epidemics.
In “The Health of Nations: The Campaign to End Polio and Eradicate Epidemic Diseases” (Oneworld Publications), British journalist and Sunday Times best-selling author Karen Bartlett surveys the global landscape of epidemics past, present, and future. Beginning with the 1980 eradication of smallpox, she guides us through more timely threats such as the Ebola and Zika viruses, and looks ahead to a future without malaria, measles, or polio.
State Public Defender Adam Gregg from our State's new Wrongful Conviction Division, has a 25 minute presentation titled “Under the Microscope: Identifying Wrongful Convictions in Iowa".
