DG Update

DG Erna Morain and her husband Steve have completed their visits to the Districts 65 clubs and they report a great deal of enthusiasm, activity, membership growth and increased foundation giving. They are also pleased with the emphasis of the clubs on Food Insecurity, this year’s theme.

DG Morain has been excited to see the number of younger member involvement in many of the clubs, both as new members and taking over leadership positions. She said it is especially pleasing to see that the older and long time members are the most excited to see the involvement of a new generation.

For an update on all the exciting activities in your District 6000 and our 65 clubs, be sure to check out this month's RD 6000 NEWS at this link:

Polio Update

Dear Polio Eradication Warriors,

One new Wild Polio case reported this week.

Rotary is quite concerned about the increased numbers of Vaccine Derived cases as well as the Wild Polio cases.   Some of the increase in case numbers is due to better surveillance with more cases being identified.  When vaccine derived cases are confirmed, there is an immediate response with vaccinations given in the immediate area.  The CDC has created an outbreak response team and plans to deploy more than 60 CDC staff over the next 6 months to concentrate on Vaccine Derived outbreaks.  I hope this will help as you inform your District's Rotarians about the Vaccine Induced Polio cases.

Vaccine Induced Polio Cases - From 2000 to date, 1085 cases of paralytic cVDPV have been reported, 932 (86%) of which were type 2. During the same period, >10 million cases of paralytic polio were averted. Vaccine-associated paralytic polio can occur in children who receive the vaccine, usually after the first dose, or in their susceptible close contacts, for a total of 2–4 cases per birth cohort of 1,000,000 children before the switch from tri-valent OPV to bi-valent OPV. Since the switch, an estimated 160–240 cases per year of type 2 vaccine associated paralytic polio have been averted. Cessation of all OPV use after certification of polio eradication will eliminate the risk for VDPV emergence and spread.

 Vaccine Derived Polio Cases -  Vaccine Derived Polio Cases reported in 2019 - 195:  Papua New Guinea - 0 (26 in 2018).  CAR - 16 (0 on 2018).  Nigeria - 18 (34 in 2018)  Niger - 1 (10 in 2018).  Somalia - 3 (13 in 2018).  DRC - 50 (20 in 2018).  Mozambique - 0 - (1 in 2018). Angola - 60 (0 in 2018).  China - 1 (0 In 2018).  Ethiopia - 3 (0 in 2018). Myanmar - 6 (0 in 2018), Benin - 6 (0 in 2018), Ghana - 9 (0 in 2018), Philippines - 5 (0 in 2018), Zambia 1 (0 in 2018), Pakistan - 11 (0 in 2018), Togo -3 (0 in 2018).   One hundred and four Vaccine Derived Polio cases were reported in 2018.

The Final Three Polio Endemic Countries:

  • Pakistan - No new Polio cases reported this week. Ninety-One Polio cases reported in 2019.  The most recent cases were: 1 each from the Bannu & Lakki Marwat Districts of the Khyber Pkhtunkhwa Province & 1 each from the Karachi Kamari, Shaheed Benazirabad, & Jamshoro Districts in the Sindh Province.  The most recent case had an onset of paralysis on 11/07/19.  Pakistan reported twelve Wild Polio cases in 2018.  Twenty-five new Polio-Positive Environmental Samples were reported this week in Pakistan.

  • Afghanistan - One new Polio case reported this week. Twenty-Two Polio cases reported in 2019.  The most recent case was from the Kandahar District with an onset of paralysis on 11/10/19. Afghanistan reported twenty-one Wild Polio cases in 2018. One Polio-Positive Environmental Sample was reported this week in Afghanistan.

  • Nigeria - No Wild Polio cases have been reported in 2017, 2018, or 2019.   The most recent Polio case was reported on 8/20/16.  Nigeria is to be congratulated on over Three Years without a Wild Polio case!

Our Goal is Global Polio Eradication!!
