a camp for everyone

By

The original People of Action

For more than 90 years, the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri, USA, has been mobilizing an army of volunteers to keep the campsite running and meet its structural needs.

Club 13, as it is locally known, made the first donation to The Rotary Foundation, $26.50 in 1917, and its members continue to model Rotary’s passion for taking action and bringing ideas to life.

In the 1920s, Robert Gees, then president of the club, recognized the need for a summer camp for needy boys after the closing of a Boys Hotel in the city with a similar mission. Buying a heavily wooded tract near a canyon and stream, he placed it in trust, granting exclusive use to the club provided that it always be used for youth activities.

Four Rotarians and a bank representative serve as trustees today, upholding those conditions and ensuring sustainability.

The facility evolved into a special needs camp in the 1940s when Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts began using it for Scouts with disabilities. That focus broadened a decade later to all children with disabilities. Today, Scouts of all kinds use the camp on weekends when school is in session while special needs organizations and Scouts with disabilities have exclusive run of the wheelchair-accessible facilities for free all summer.

You. Lead. now.

Practical leadership development training coming in June!

Heartland AEA is pleased to invite you to participate in a 2 ½ day comprehensive leadership development experience called You. Lead. Now., designed to help you make progress on what you care about most.

You. Lead. Now. will help you:

  •  Learn a leadership framework for progress on tough challenges
  • Practice new leadership behaviors
  • Learn powerful and provocative ideas to help you mobilize groups around what matters most
  • Apply all leadership concepts to your own challenges

The program is a practical, comprehensive guide designed to help you hone the behaviors, attitude and mindset necessary to create lasting impact for yourself, your organization or your community. It is designed to create the mindset that leadership is an activity and requires ongoing learning and practice. Moreover, the framework creates a shared language for greater collaboration and organizational impact.

Through application tools, educational experiences and peer-to peer interaction, the goal of the program is for participants to receive a comprehensive set of resources to foster long-term growth and lasting change. You’ll also receive feedback and support from highly-trained instructors and coaches.

By attending You. Lead. Now. you’ll join others from all sectors and levels of leadership with a common aspiration: to move forward on what you care about most.
